Hyperpigmentation

Treating Hyperpigmentation AT Oceren Skin Care Spa

WHAT IS Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a frequently occurring skin condition where certain areas of the skin become darker, resulting in patches or spots. The darkening of the skin can be due to several factors such as exposure to sunlight, hormonal changes, and injuries. This condition is not limited to any specific skin type or color and can be a cosmetic concern for many people. Although hyperpigmentation is not typically harmful or painful, it can be stubborn to treat and may persist for an extended period without the appropriate care.

Factors That Can Cause Or Aggravate Hyperpigmentation

It can also be caused by other factors like genetics, irritation, inflammation, hormonal changes, or even heredity. Here are some factors that can cause or aggravate hyperpigmentation:

Genetics: If you have family members with dark skin tone, then you may be more likely to experience hyperpigmentation.

Inflammation: If your skin becomes inflamed due to injury or infection (like acne), it can cause an increase in melanin production and make your skin darker.

Age: As we age, our skin cells become less effective at protecting us from UV damage and other sources of inflammation that can lead to hyperpigmentation.

Prevention Tips For Hyperpigmentation

1. Wear sunscreen every day.

2. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays with an SPF of 30+.

3. Limit your exposure to the sun between 10am and 2pm when the sun’s rays are the strongest.

4. Exfoliate your skin once or twice a week to remove dead cells from the surface of your skin which helps prevent hyperpigmentation.

5. Avoid tanning beds, as they can cause irreversible damage to your skin.

Treatment Of Hyperpigmentation

There are several ways to treat hyperpigmentation, including exfoliation, chemical peels and laser treatments.

Exfoliation involves removing dead skin cells from the surface of your face, which helps to prevent new pigment from settling into your pores. Chemical peels use acids or enzymes to remove the top layer of skin cells and create a new layer that’s smoother and brighter. Laser treatments use high-energy light to heat up dark patches on your face so they can be removed with an electric current.
